Start Menu
When you click Start button on the task bar, the start menu appears. The start menu lists commands and additional menus that list most of all the programs that you can on your computer. You can use the start menu to run almost the entire almost program install on your computer. The start menu usually includes the windows update programs, favorites, documents, settings, find, help, run, and shutdown commands and other commands may also appear on the menu for example: - if you install MS-Office 2000, its installation program adds two commands to the start menu. New office document and office you can customize which programs appear on the start menu.

Task Bar
The Task bar is the row of bottom and icons that usually appears along the bottom of the screen. You can also tell window to hide the task bar when you aren’t using it. The task bar has several parts: 1- Start Button. 2- Task Manager 3- System Tray.

Task Manager
The task manager is a part of task bar that shows button for each program that is run in. If a program displays more than one window, more than one button may appear.
Click a Windows button; select a window that is making that window active. You can also right click a button to see the system menu, a menu commands you can give regarding that window, including opening.

Desktop
Window’s 98 uses your screen as a desktop a work area on which you see your programs. The desktop can contain windows, icons, and the taskbar. You can think of the icons and windows that appear on your screen as “setting” on your metaphorical.
System Tray : The system tray appears at the right end of the task bar. It contains the tiny icons, along with the system clock. The programs related to the icons of the system tray are following:-


1-Task Scheduler:- Double click on this icon to tell Windows to run program on specified time.
2- Volume:- Click this icon to control the volume of your computer’s speakers if any.

Control Panel
The control panel is a window that displays icons for a number of programs that let you control your computer, Windows 98 software installs this program help you see and change the program of many part of Windows 98.
You see the control panel, choose Start>Settings>Control Panel. The icons in the control panel window may include this program, depending on what Window 98 component and other software you have installed. Following are the few icons available on the window of Control Panel: -
1 Add new hardware

3 Accessibility
4 Date/Time

Wizards
 Windows 98, like many other Microsoft programs, include many wizards program that step you through process of creating and configuring something.

Wallpaper
Putting wallpaper on your desktop is a bit of a mixed metaphor-perhaps contact paper would be better. Wallpaper is the background pattern behind all the windows, icons and menu on your desktop. Any image file can be centered on the screen or it can file the screen by being repeated as tiles.

Font

Modern computer can display text in a variety of typefaces and sizes as illustrated. In fixed pitch typefaces, all the characters have the same width like on a typewriter. In proportionally, spaced typefaces, different characters have different width. Most typefaces are available in different sizes, with the size measured in printer’s point 01/72 inches. The most common sizes are 10-points and 12-points.

Desktop Scheme
Desktop Scheme is a desk of settings including colors and fonts save with the name.

Desktop Theme
A Desktop theme provides not just a system of color and font but sound, icons, mouse pointer, desktop background and screen saver as well.


Back-up
Back up means making copies of your files so that you can get the information back should anything happen to the originals. A great number of unfortunate things can happen to files.
(a)- A physical disaster like fire, flood or cat hair could destroy your computer.
(b)- A hardware problem could erase same of your files. For example- installing an upgrade to an application program might accidentally write over the folders in witch you stored the previous document that were created with that application.
MS- back up program is available in windows.

Machine Cycle
The machine cycle has four steps:
1- Fetch 2- Decode
3- Execute 4- Store
The time it takes to complete first to steps is called Instruction Time or (i-time). The time it takes to complete last to steps is called Execute Time (e-time).

Voice Mail
One of biggest problem in business is “Phone Tag” where you call someone, discover he or she isn’t there and then leave the message for the person to return your call. When the person got the message and does call back but you aren’t there, so he or she leaves the message for you.
A computer based solution of this problem is called Voice-Mail, which automatically answering and messaging at phone. When you are connecting at a person’s extension, if they don’t pick the phone, the voice mail system answers and asks you to leave a message.

Search Engine
Search engine on web let you look up information using key words that might be in the document you want to find e.g. Yahoo.com and Alta-vista.

Clipboard
The easiest way to move within an application or from one application to another is to use the window’s Clipboard, a handy little tool that works in the background, saving text, numbers, pictures or whatever you cut or copy and allowing you to paste the material somewhere.

Screen Saver
If you walk away from your computer and leave monitor on the same image might be on your screen for hour at a time. Year ago this would tend to “burn in” the image permanently on the screen and so created screen savers program that kick in when the display hasn’t changed in a while. A good screen saver contains some kind of moving image, so that no section of the screen is constantly bright or dark.
